Conditional Vulnerability in University Research

‍ Contextual Vulnerability and Substantive Autonomy in Human-Subjects Research

This paper presents an application of Conditional Vulnerability Ethics (CoVE) to university research involving human participants, examining how contextual conditions may affect autonomy and ethical vulnerability within the research environment.

The analysis specifically considers the distinction between formal consent and substantive autonomy and explores the implications of a contextual approach to vulnerability for research ethics and participant protections. It considers how ethical oversight might respond when conditions affecting autonomy and vulnerability change during research participation.
